Project Description & Process

The Instructional Media Screencast project was designed to have candidates become familiar with one of the many engaging new methods of sharing information. A screencast is nothing more than a video capture of one's monitor. Jing allows users to combine that video capture with an audio overlay, creating an audio-video amalgamation that can be easily uploaded to the Internet and shared with others. I opted to create a simple screencast about setting up and completing a Punnett square, as my Virtual Classroom Instruction project includes a component that will requires students to complete Punnett squares.

Reflection

Video capture is not a new technology, nor is an audio overlay -- for that matter, neither is combining the two into an audio-video stream. However, the Internet has allowed users to easily share media such as this. Screencast.com has established itself as the premier screencast archive, while Jing has become the leader in easy screencast production. Prior to this project, I was unaware of Jing or Screencast.com, so clearly I had never used either service. It is quite evident, however, that both sites fit the mold of Web 2.0 in that they are interactive in their production and dissemination of information.

I enjoyed creating my screencast and can see many practical classroom applications -- for both the virtual and traditional classroom environments. I have already uploaded this screencast to my District-provided website and will be including it in my instruction as soon as I can. I have discussed screencasts with a Social Studies colleague of mine and we have put started compiling a list of student-created products and are eager to implement Jing and screencasts in our classrooms -- assuming that our school allows us to install Jing in our computer lab.
